Heroes of 2007
At this time of year, when we are reviewing what has happened and
are starting to look forward to the many challenges of 2008, many sectors have acknowledgements
of one sort or another. Social care has never been great at this, it seems to me
we are better at trying to knock people down rather than celebrate achievements.
So it was great to see in this morning's Community Care Magazine an increased recognition
of three people with learning disabilities who work for us in their heroes of 2007
slot.

The magazine had asked leaders in social care who they
nominated. Eve Rank nominated her husband Peter in her role as a carer with a learning
disability, something their campaign ! will be making much more of next year as an
unrecognised area. And Richard West was nominated by Paul Snell, the Chief Inspector
at CSCI. We support Richard on their experts by experience group and have been very
impressed by their dedication to listening to what their experts say. Unusually for
groups of this kind, they are religious in taking action and letting people know
the results. I know this has been a refreshing change for Richard who has often been
frustrated by his involvement with other groups who pay more lip service to his comments.
