Valuing People advisory committee, National Forum of people with learning difficulties and Who Cares for us?
“I think in all the work we do its fun because we can have a laugh as well as get on with the important stuff at the bottom of the list.
On the DH Valuing People advisory committee you managed to get people with learning disabilities for the first time working together on policy and law. This changed people’s lives for the better. This was the same when you supported us to set up the National Forum of people with learning difficulties.
Your work got people with learning disabilities to become national self advocates like me as a commissioner on the Disability Rights Commission (DRC) and Michelle as co chair of the Learning Disability task force.
With the ‘Who Cares for us?’ stuff I think the support is really fab! I’m not
saying the support wasn’t fab in the other stuff you supported us in, it was, but
this is different because people with learning disabilities are now becoming carers.
This is a newer issue -
Eve Rank, DRC Commissioner and self advocate.
“Andrew, Steph and Darren have been very good at supporting at different meetings and also sometimes when there's a problem at home.
For example, you supported me to get help from CSCI to tell social services how I feel about not getting the right service or help. About them seeing us as 2 different people and not thinking about myself and Tracey as a couple and I’m full time carer for Tracey.
You have been there for me when supporting me to say or write things down at meetings. Because I’m deaf I do need a sign language interpreter so I can understand some words but also you tell me in another way and make words and things easier for me.
Both myself and Eve are very happy for you to support us in our ‘Who Cares for us?’ project. As we're both carers with a learning disability we need some help to get our full rights and to be recognised as carers.”
Richard West, chair of the National Advisory Group on Learning Disabilities and Ethnicity. CSCI expert by experience.
"I am writing to thank you most sincerely for the important part that you played in the recruitment process for Walsingham Directors. The Board and I were sure we wanted and needed to get the views of service users but felt that it was important that they were helped to express their views by someone outside Walsingham so that it would be seen to be fair.
I know that you and our service users thought very carefully about how you should assess the candidates and how you should report back to trustees on your views. This is never an easy job – but it was very important. This really was a team effort and I was very grateful that you were able to support us in this way. Your experience, knowledge and expertise was a real asset in terms of us assessing each applicant and your comments were extremely helpful."
