Making life more accessible
People with learning disabilities as carers.
Carers with a learning disability are a forgotten, but growing, group of people. This is happening for two main reasons.
Firstly, despite health services for people with learning difficulties still being entirely inadequate, people are living longer. Many people have also found a lack of support towards living independently, as a result significant numbers of people with learning difficulties are still living at home whilst surviving parents are getting older and, increasingly, needing care and support themselves.
Secondly, when people do get support towards independence some people are choosing to live with a partner and sometimes your partner needs extra help and support because of their disability.
There is a frightening lack of awareness about this group of carers in the social care system meaning many are left to struggle on without support until crisis occurs.
Richard West and Eve Rank have joined forces with Inspired Services to bring about change. This page will act as a growing resource of material detailing the issues and the campaign.
